Bill Fellows WOWED them at the organ!
"STAR SHINE" NATIONAL CHAMPION JUNIOR PRECISION TEAM EXHIBITED!
SKATELAND'S NATIONAL CHAMPS EXHIBITED!
- Junior Precision Team Members skated two amazing routines.
- Gold Medal winner Amy Claus and Bronze Medal winner Lisa Winn Afonso skated a medley of dances.
- There was a picture wall full of pictures; a table full of odds and ends, pictures, programs, and some valuable old magazines and newspapers from 1939 and up.
- A supply of old GAZETTES for people to take. We still have these Gazettes, ask for them when you come on Tuesday nights.
A surprising number of people arrived because they saw the notice in the calendar section of their local newspaper. People in this area really read their papers! More often than not, they still had their old skates up in the attic, dusted them off, and came down to skate. Many of these ex-skaters were surprised to find that they could still do it and plan to return to a dance session to get back in shape.
Another group who attended came as a result of a direct mailing from the list of the recent Wal-Lex Reunion (Waltham, MA) attendees. Several skated who had not skated in over 30 years.
Everywhere you looked, you could see old friends getting reacquainted. A few, who seemed to be by themselves, were seriously reminiscing. It was a grand night. The previous owners, Tillio and Mary Carbone, came and enjoyed seeing old friends and many news clippings on the walls. The organist, Bill Fellows from Long Beach, Connecticut, traveled a long distance to play everyone’s favorite skate dance music to an appreciative crowd. Skateland’s two United States National Junior Olympic Champions, Amy Claus and Lisa Winn Afonso, skated a dance medley of their winning dances. The crowd was surprised and very pleased to see exhibitions of a relatively new event called precision team. “Star Shine”, the United States Junior Precision Team Champions from Tyngsboro, Massachusetts, skated two exciting numbers. Their proud coaches, Diane Gagnon and Bonnie Becker (Tara couldn't come) were in attendance and received a contribution to their travel fund from the Skateland Figure Skating Club. Many members of the club brought home baked items and sandwiches for the bake sale which was a big success.
